Template errors

Hi guys,
I just picked up a 1975 CJ5 in really good shape, solid frame and body, little surface rust but that's to be expected with a 37 year old car. I was trying to install new side mirrors the other day, but when I was attempting to remove he old mounts a couple of the screws broke off, so half the screw was left in the hole (not allowing me to put the new screws in) any ideas on how to remove these broken screws? Thanks in advance! I will post pictures as soon as I get her ready for the road.
 
best thing is a nice extractor set with left hand drill bits and ez outs.

Spray them with some penetrating lube/oil and let them sit. Try and use a small hammer and chisel to work them out. Or drill them out.

I generaly have bad luck with extractors when rust is envolved. I proceed as you would with an extractor in drilling a small hole in the very center of the remaing screw/bolt and trying the extractor and if does not come right out I increase drill size untill I'm right at the threads then it usualy falls out or can be picked out or run a tap into. Do not try too hard and break the extractor off in the hole then you have a worse problem because they are hardened and can't be drilled.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll try the extractor and see what happens (I'm not too confident that it will work but you never know)

It's frustrating having this jeep sitting there and not being able to drive it :(
 
A cobalt drill is quite hard and will often help.

I will get some cobalt bits and try the extraction tonight or sometime this week.

On an unrelated note, does anyone know whether or not you need a spare tire and jack on these old jeeps in order to pass a safety inspection?
 
FWIW, I was at autozone yesterday and saw a extractor set with cobalt reverse drill bits and extractors. It was only 20 bucks so who knows what the quality will be. When I was a tech I had snap on and matco sets and they would still break/wear out if you weren't careful.

Keep trying kroil and pb blaster. I have fallen back in love with that stuff since becoming a jeep owner.

Oh ya, another trick is to take a punch and hammer and smack whats left in the hole. Seems counter productive to be hammering the piece into the hole but the jarring will remove some of the surface tension. Just don't want to smack it hard enough to break the threads or force it deeper.

By the way what exactly is Kroil and PB Blaster?

If all else fails do you think drilling a new set of holes would work? would the new screws be able to dig and latch onto the metal without any threads? (sorry I'm a newb when it comes to this stuff)
 
Those are both penetrating lubes for breaking free seized parts. Pretty hard to find kroil which is what we used to use, but PB blaster works great. Autozone has it; saw it at home depot the other day also.

You could drill new holes but then you'd probably end up with new holes in the bracket or jeep that don't get covered. Id def. drill and tap for the screw.

That def. a last resort. When you use those lefty drill bits, try and use the one that is right in the middle of smallest or biggest. The small ones tend to break easily and you are going to end up a little off center so if its the biggest you'll get into the threads. Not necessarily a bad thing as you can usually break the screw out then. Go slow with the speed as well. Most of the time the bit will dig in and actually back the screw out for you.

Spray it and let it sit a little while. Smack it with a punch a couple times. Wipe off excess lube; that inhibits getting the bit started.

Thats a nice set up JeepFreek77. I'm assuming it's a t-18... does it have the really low 1st gear?

The 3 spd is fine for cruising around town in. Smooth, quick shifting tranny. But it sucks for offroading. 1st gear isn't very low and coupled with the dana 20 (poor low range ratio) it doesn't crawl well which leaves bouncing over everything as the only option (hard on the back!). I like the look of the teraflex low gear set for the dana 20. It's on my 'one day when I'm rich' list :D

Yup my first gear is real low, very torquey, engine sounds amazing, not sure what transfer case and exhaust it is, I'll have to ask the PO. I'll get some pictures up as soon as I get a chance.

Huuurrrrrrryyyyy up! :laugh: Sounds like an awesome machine sir. My V8 is sounding a bit lame right now due to the exhaust leak :rolleyes:
