Earlier this evening I was looking at kits to overhaul the carburetor on my '79 CJ7 . I went to jeep4x4center.com and did a live chat with a salesperson that gave me a link to a carburetor kit for a 6 cylinder. I have an 8 cylinder and he said it wasn't possible given the CJ7 's VIN. The previous owner told me that it has the original engine in it. It is in fact a V-8. There are 8 spark plugs that are running to the distributor cap.

I began looking for any identifying marks on the engine itself, aside from the order firing number on the top of the engine, but found none. I'm not really sure which carb kit I should get now as the salesperson told me he couldn't help me without the actual engine model number stamped on the engine. He said if I do indeed have an 8 cylinder, the 6 cylinder carb kit wouldn't work.

I've looked on top of the block, on the sides, on the valve covers....where else can I look? Or if anyone else out there has a '79 CJ7 with an 8 cylinder able to steer me to the right kit...

Thanks :o

edit: the part number on the side of the carburetor is 7043792 and it's a GM 2 Jet Rochester.

If you have a AMC 304 /360 then you probably have the MC2100 carburator... Take off the air filter assembly and there "should" be a little tag attached to one of the screws on top - on that tag is a number - take that number to any parts store and they'll be able to get the correct rebuild kit for your carb - regardless of VIN, etc.

There isn't a tag on any of the screws. I live in Panama so I have to order the kit online and have it shipped here since old Jeep stuff is extremely difficult to find. Is there any other way to figure out which kit I need?

I tried googling the rochester carb part number to see if I could get a carb kit that matched it or would work with it but came up empty handed. I also find it weird that the VIN says I have a 6 cyl when there's an 8 in there and supposedly it's all original...

Got the carb kit model. After finding a few pics of where the engine model could be through the link you posted, I found it. It's the 360...thanks for the link!
