i just bought a 1984 CJ7 with 130,000 miles. Seems to be in pretty good shape. But it pops out of 1st gear about 40% of the time. Any ideas?

Time for a rebuild. Probably a blown syncro.

You might get advice like: Check your motor mounts ..... It could be your Transmission mount ....... clutch, throwout bearing, bad bearings and other stuff, but 99% of the time you need a rebuild. Before I did that I'd research the Transmission you have. Some transmissions in the 1980's simply aren't worth a rebuild. I.E. fix'em and they quickly break again. The transmissions were simply to lightly built.

I also think you need that overhaul, the aluminum cased transmissions for the later CJs were weak at best. I am quite suprised at the guys who still use them. I had a problem once where it would slip out of second gear whenever I let off the gas, the tranny overhaul fixed it.

I would at least make sure it's full of oil first. Then rebuid it.

You need to give us more information about your Jeep. Engine, Transmission , tire size any modifications, all of it is important for this discussion.

Naturally for a same/same Transmission change rebuilding would be less expensive. However that might not be the best choice. There are LOTS of Transmission options to consider. Go to the Novak web site and start reading, Advanced Adaptors is another good site.

Do you know what Transmission you have?
As Torxhead and others have said, you may want to upgrade. The T-176 was the best Transmission of the 80's. That would be the easiest swap but the lengths of the driveshafts would need to be modified. I am assuming you don't have a T-176 already. Buyers would need to specify the heavy duty Transmission to get one but they are not rare.

When I was in your shoes I swapped out a T-5 Transmission for a Ford T-18 . That's an excellent tranny. It's a truck Transmission and it shifts as such. Maybe that's more than you need but it's a great Transmission for off-roading.

Loved my Ford T-18 ......
