They are different in that the 44 has a tapered shaft with a fairly large key, the AMC20 is splined with a slight taper but the problem seams to be the splines are very shallow. All inner axles are splined to the spider gears or locker what ever you have and you don't hear about them being a problem(at least I don't) but then they are splined deeper and in the case of your early 44 very coarse(10 spline).

After I say all that I thought the CJ5 had a flanged axle in those years?

:confused:I guess I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to axels and differentials etc.
For some reason I was under the impression the Dana 44 had free floating axels.
I guess one of these days I'll figure it out.:eek:
