I recently traded for a 1981 CJ5 . It has a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 2 barrel in it that needs rebuilt. The tranny is a 4 speed. I have come across a 1976 CJ5 with the AMC 232 i6 backed by a 3 speed. Can I mate the AMC 232 i6 with my 4 speed? Is it a plug and play type or what do I need to do to make it work. I appreciate all the info I can on it.

But Why? Surely not because one needs a carb. rebuild.

My bad. The carb is fine. It has a lower end knock. I didn't know if the bell housings and flywheel would mate going from a 3 speed in the 76 to a four speed in my 81 and being different 6 cylinders.

Yes it will bolt right in

+2 I agree

I'm doing the same thing except backwards. I've got a good AMC 232 i6 with a 3spd grenaded behind it and am looking to swap in the bellhousing, Transmission , xfer case from an '86 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . I know the input shafts differ between the 76-79 (1 1/16" 10T) and the 80-86 (1 1/8 10T) and also that the flywheels have different part #'s . Is there a ring gear offset difference or what? What about the pilot bushing?
