I have a 79 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . Head is cracked and I am going to have to spend some money getting it fixed. I have a running AMC 304 in my barn that I could drop in the CJ. T20 Transmission with a Dana 44 rear end.

QUESTION...should I go to the AMC 304 and MORE IMPORTANTLY is it a direct bolt in????

THANKS!!!!

its up to your wallet to decide more than anything, is it a direct drop in "NO" the bell housing clutch and linkage are the same, you will have to have the AMC 304 flywheel motor mounts V8 radiator and all the V8 accesory drive from there bolt it in hook it up and wire it :chug: no problem if you have the parts or you could just replace the head on your I6 your call :chug:

Thanks soooo much for the info! Appreciate the help! :D

Grooms Cylinder Heads, has AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l heads in stock starting at 220.00 to 450.00 depending on casting number. You can also try National Cylinder Head.

They will want to know the casting number of course however the bigger question will be 7/16" or 1/2" head bolts.

Best luck on your repairs.

easiest and least expensive is a 4.0 head. Does the AMC 304 have the original flywheel?? Flywheels are match balanced to crank assembly on the AMC V8s.
