In previous installations of this timing cover gasket I have used a minimal amount of black RTV on the gasket and in reading two different shop manuals ( newer versions ) one manual states not to use any type sealant on the gasket and install dry, the other one states to lightly coat both sides of gasket and install.

Any recommendations? I will probably install like the others and very very lightly coat both sides.

You dont want to inadvertantly plug up anything behind the timing cover with RTV...there's too much that can go wrong. Therefore, it's easier for the manuals to just eliminate the problem by instructing against the use of it.

However, I always use a light film of black RTV anyways....call me a rebel...I dont like oil leaks and Im confident enough in my application method that Im not worried about it.

I agree. A light coating of ultra black RTV. Has not given me any issues. I, too don't like oil leaks.

X3--light as a coat as you can get it with your finger to both surfaces.
