I have an 89 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l swapped into my 85 CJ7 and I picked up a starter motor from a 82.
It bolts right up, but I'm worried that the teeth will be engaged all the time.
Will it work, or do I have to get the newer style starter?

the old starter is for the 85 AMC 150 and has a different bolt pattern.
the 89 engine I got did not come with a starter

just not sure that the motor's gear will sit correctly with the teeth on the flywheel..the teeth are the same size, but it looks to me that the teeth will mesh as soon as I install it.

I've returned the 82 starter and picked up an 89...we'll see what happens...

The 89 starter is way smaller and the gear wheel barely sticks out. It also has a solenoid on the side. Same bolt pattern though. I'll try it out tonite.

measure from the face of the bell to the end of the front of the ring gear and from the face of the starter to the end of the drive gear. compare the two.
