Hi i just purchased an 82 CJ5 4cyl i was wondering how to find out what i have? i had to drive it home on back roads due to top speed being 35mph ,wondering what i can do to figure this out. other than that i have a chunk missing off the bottom of the bell housing ,carb is missing some noticeable parts and cyl 4 seams to have a problem . po said its been sitting for two years i changed out fuel filter and spark plugs, all plugs are getting spark but when i pull wire #4 nothing changes like when the other 3 are pulled one at a time.

Are you in 4 low maybe? What RPM are you at?

Joe,

Here is a good place to start. It will tell what came stock and at least that is a good place to start.

Then crawl under there and see what things look like, look for model numbers. Go to google and do an image search for the thing you want to know about like " Transfer Case 1982 jeep CJ5 ". Then see if the images match. Just be careful what you search for because too generic a search will turn up things you don't want to search for at work"

Then take some pictures of things and show them to us if you can't find them online.

You didn't say why you couldn't go faster the 35, was it RPMs, wabble, bump steer, wandering, what were the symptoms?

You've got a lot of little things to do and check over before thinking it's the gears. ..

I'd start with cleaning out the fuel tank and back flushing all the fuel lines. Then I'd take the carb apart and re-build it.

From there, if you notice anything else wrong along the way, start writing it on a list and prioritize it to get the important ones done first (or however you prioritize be it financially etc)

I assume when you said top speed of 35 that either jasonmark1993 is correct and you may have been in 4 low (Transfer Case setting) or your engine is not producing power as it should...

Here's a good thread for getting home and what to check...

Cool looking Jeep. Looks pretty straight. Cept' for the big f'n hole in the bell.

Those front shackles are huge. Hows it drive?

So we don't know why it wont go over 35...or what caused that hole in the bell. You've got oil leaking out of somewhere....rear main? Was it making any unusual noises?

If this were mine, Id do like you were saying and ID all the components. Then Id decide on the path; upgrade the engine and or Transmission or start dumping money into what you have. If it were an easy tune up or something, thats one thing. You could drive it with that hole there, but I'm guessing thats a rear main leaking; might just be the oil pan.

I bought my Jeep in Yucaipa. Nice up there.

Very basically:

Keeping 4 cyl:
Pros:

  • Better gas mileage
  • No drivetrain changes needed.
Cons:

  • Less power
Swapping V-8:
Pros:

  • More Power
Cons:

  • Worse gas mileage
  • Drivetrain changes needed

By Drivetrain changes:

You may or may not need to get a new Transmission , bellhousing adapter, etc. You will need to modify exhaust. You will need to shorten / lengthen drivelines. You will need to move drivetrain components.

and the list goes on.

I'm not saying "dont do it" just saying it'll take some planning, time, and cash.

Looks like you already took some pictures of the ID tags.

Sometimes you just have to do it off the casting numbers.

A good place to start would be to google what came stock in your jeep and compare. Dont have the link but there is a "jeeptech" page somewhere that lists the stock components for each generation and ways to ID what you have.

Looks like a Dana 300 Transfer Case .
Nothing wrong with the 4 banger if you run 30" or smaller tires. They just can't pull bigger tires.

Hi all well I did some looking online and I believe I have the T-176 Transmission the only thing making me second guess is all the sludge covering the metal or aluminum ? Lol well I have came across a turn key i6 motor that has been gone threw new seals ,berrings the works he just pulled it out a few weeks ago for a v8 swap I was wondering what kind of mods I need to do to complete the swap ? I'll post a pic of the new motor later BTW it looks sweet :)
