I have an 82 CJ7 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l L rebuilt mostly stock.

Last night out of the blue it would only fire for a second, but if I held the key in the start position it would continue to run. Then I noticed that the wiring harness was getting hot along the fire wall in the engine compartment. Unhooked the battery, then pulled all the wires out of the split loom and found the hot wire. Seems the resistor wire is getting very very hot. So far this is what I have done,

Checked the crimps on the resistor wire both seem good.
Un plugged the coil and starter solenoid. If I turn the key to run and hook up either wire the resistor wire gets very hot in a few seconds.
unplugged the ICM, resistor wire only gets hot if I plug in the starter solenoid, whgich makes sence since the coil grounds bak through the ICM I think

I am at a bit of a loss, coil / starter sonenoid / ICM all isolated individually and the resistor wire still gets very hot in seconds with the key on. I am thinking it seems like a short, I just have no idea where to start looking.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
