To me the best combo would be to use an AMC V8 (AMC 304 , 360, or 401) bolted to a Jeep TF 727 and use the existing Dana 300 you already have. Keep your Jeep, Jeep.

I also agree on the AMC V8 TF727 swap to keep it Jeep and its an easy swap mostly involving replacement parts store parts However since you said SBC specifically then the Dana 300 thats in your jeep now and a GM Turbo 400 would be my vote:chug:

I don't know anything about an AMC or a Mopar motor. I'm really a Chevy guy, but I'm all about keeping things stock. If I went with the GM Turbo 400 Transmission swap, are there any mods that have to be done to make it fit with the Dana 300 ? Has anybody ever used a 700r4?

Get the 700r4 with the Dana 300 to your chevy motor. You will need an adapter for the Transmission to Transfer Case . Novak adapters makes a nice one for this swap and their site has a lot of info on what you need to do.

700R4 with lockup controller. The GM Turbo 400 is a good tranny, but it sucks more power than a TH727, and it only has 3 speeds.
