I just got a 1984 CJ7 base model, it use to be towed behind a camper. I knew when I got it the 4wd did not work but I got a fantastic deal on it. Could anyone tell me where to start looking and how to test and rule out TC Dana 300 or differential ? Thanks

First, congrats on getting the Jeep. Now, on to the problem. I think I would put all four corners of the Jeep on jack stands and put the tc in four wheel drive. See if the front driveshaft turns. If it turns and the wheels do not, then I think you would pretty much have the problem isolated to the front diff or the locking hubs.

A V-6 was never offered in an '84 CJ7 . I really like a V6 in a CJ, lots of power in a short package. All this says is, if you have a V6 your CJ has been highly modifies and most anything we say just might be wrong for your application.

Knowing what your Transmission is would be very helpful.

How is it not going into 4wd? Does the Transfer Case lever move? Will it go into any gear at all. Can you put the Transfer Case in neutral?

Could be something simple like the shift mechanism is dirty or fouled. The front hubs might not be working correctly (you did try locking the hubs in?). How are your fluids? The Transfer Case needs a fresh drink every now and then, the Transmission and Transfer Case are separate in your CJ. Some of the older CJ's had an open area between the Transfer Case and the Transmission . Both had separate drains and filler plugs, but still shared their oils. I had a friend that swore on putting different oil in the Transfer Case and Transmission , being convinced that it helped each in different ways. He was and still is in denial of the fact that his D18 and T-14 regularly passed oil between each other mixing his carefully selected oils.

:agree: If you can't identify all the parts, post some pictures so we can help. There's no telling what you might have. But let's identify the engine, Transmission , Transfer Case , and axles first. Once we are positive about all of that there are some really smart guys on this forum that can help you out.

:ww:

Did you engage the front hubs, when testing for 4WD?
IF, in fact you do have a v-6 engine. That is not the engine the Jeep was built with at the factory.
X2 on pictures.
