ok so im helping my buddy fix his CJ5 and im a pretty decent mechanic but im having some issues resolving my problems here. it starts and idles great even revs all through the tach without a hiccup... put it into first and it try's to stall and die and if your lucky it will run fine until you shift into second then it starts to stall... give it gas and it hiccups and sputters until it catches or dies. same if you let off the gas too.

what i've done... i've adjusted the air/fuel mixture, cleaned the carb, cleaned the jets, checked and adjusted the floats in the bowls, adjusted the needles, advanced and retarded the timing till it was set, checked all the gaskets and vacuum lines, and had the breather on and off... it just acts like its not getting enough fuel when you put a load on the motor (no backfires so i assume its not flooding) any advice on what the issue could be? no broken links either... im assuming the issue is with the carb or timing but the previous owner put a msd ignition and multi spark set up into it so im assuming its not the timing either.... can i please get some advice here???

:dung: in the tank. As you draw more fuel it sucks up and blocks the outflow from the tank. Let off the gas, suction drops and craps drops and you get fuel again. You are going to need to clean the tank. The problem you described I had, but I had with an electric fuel pump however, I assume it would be the same on a standard fuel pump. Hope that helps.

Have you checked the fuel filter yet? The extra load will draw more fuel and if it can't make it through the filter.

Fuel pump, check fuel line pressure. Under a load again it is putting more draw on the fuel system.

Seems I remember something about vacuum system to relieve pressure in the gas tank.

thank you guys! the old manual fuel pump did come into question since the diaphragm does like to go out on them. ill try and replace it with an electric one if it comes to it but the old one seems to be working. the gas tank is a questionable source i does have the old "sock" filter in it. i'll take a look and clean it out since i need to change the fuel gauge sensor anyway. and the fuel filter is one of the first things i checked and the filter in the carb to they are clean. ill get back to you but if anyones got another suggestion id love to hear it! thank you again guys!

I you are going to have carb induction, I would recommend keeping a mechanical fuel pump. There is a lot more involved to get an electric pump to work correctly.
