I have a 1986 i6 that has a ghost tweak. I have replaced the starter, solenoid, battery, ground and hot wires as well. When you turn the key the starter spins but won't turn the engine. I have had 5 starters, 3 solenoids, and 2 batteries, and still nothing. I can push start it and it runs like a dream so engine isn't blown. I rebonded the engine case ground. I even grounded the Transmission to the engine block with jumper cables and still nothing just whining as the starter spins. I replaced the wires from battery to the solenoid and from the solenoid to the starter. I'm lost in a huge bowl of hot sauce. Please someone help me I'm tired of push starting my awesome looking jeep and being imbarased lol.i even exchanged the starter, solenoid, and battery to my 83 CJ7 and it fired right up so everything works but not on my jeep....

Sounds like the teeth on the flywheel are broken/missing.

I had the exact same problem 2 months ago and the previous posters above are right. I have to buy a new ring gear for the engine where it engages with the starter. Bear in mind they are different for automatic and manual so make sure you get the right one. Cost around 99 Dollars.

Well when I took the starter off I inspected the teeth and they are all present and none are broken or worn. Also every starter I installed when I pulled them they had evidence of the flywheel hitting dead center of the teeth on the part that engages.

Sounds like the flywheel is spinning but not turning the crank. Or the gear ring is sheared from the flywheel. You may need to drop the Transmission and check you mechanical connections to the engine block.

:agree: you dont say weather you have a auto or a standerd. If you have a auto I have seen a couple of flex plates break around the bolts that hold it to the crank.

Try taking a screwdriver though the inspection hole and see if you can move the ring gear, this may be easier then dropping the Transmission .

So I took off the starter the other day, grabbed a yellow metal pencil and marked my flywheel and harmonic balancer to see if it rotated. I then hooked everything back up turned it over still same sound and no start. I proceeded to take the starter back off since I'm and expert at it it took seconds lol. I then looked at my markings and everything moved as it should but I still got my flat head to the teeth of the ring gear and turned it manually. As I moved it it seemed fine untill about the third rotation set, it happened....the ring gear broke away from the flywheel.... Well I guess its time to finish up the new AMC 360!!!!! Thank all of you for the help it all came in handy!
