I'm doing an HEI upgrade and am wondering what the items in the picture are. Anybody able to help would be appreciated greatly.

1st pic - the bell looking item is the oil pressure sending unit, the other two prong switch should be the choke coil switch.

The remainder pics look like the computer hook ups.

Has this CJ had the Nutter bypass done?

No it hasn't had the nutter, just looking at that now. Trying to figure out if I do the bypass if I can throw both the Ignition control Module and this electronic thingy in the darkest corner of the shop.

1st pic is of the oil pressure sending unit
2nd pic is where the plug for your computer goes
3rd pic is your computer
4th pic is the plug that goes into the computer
5th pic is where the plug goes thru the firewall to the computer.

I think you've had too many beers.....
I realize it's a computer just wondering what computer it is as i can't find mention of it in the Chilton's or anywhere online. It's not the igntion control module.

Thanx for the Link. It doesn't tell me if I still need this comp after the bypass. Can I get rid of it after or does the rest of the wires need to be wired in?

Ditch the computer.. If you plan on keeping the stock carb fallow all the steps to redoing the carb "setting the stepper motor" The HEI will get rid of the ignition module.

I would also ditch the carb for something better like a 2100, or any thing other then what you got.

As far as the oil pressure switch goes I dont think the 2 prong part goes to the comp. I was very careful when I cut out my computer harness and it didnt connect to the computer. Im not 100% sure but I thing its the Oil pressure light. I have the same set up on my 360 that has no computer.

Good luck with it. Its really not as bad as it sounds.

The bell looking item sends the oil pressure amount. The 2 prong switch is for the oil pressure light.

My 85 oil pressure switch (the two prong thingy) was wired to the choke coil through a relay. no warning light.

Well I could be wrong then. That's what someone at napa had told me a few weeks back but I never traced it or looked at the schematic. But what would oil pressure have to do with the choke though?

I don't drink beer and if you are going to be a :censored: I will not try help you any more.

But what would oil pressure have to do with the choke though?

Turn key, powers relay.

Relay powers choke coil.

Turn key, crank, pump accelerator, engine starts.

Switch gets pressure from running motor.

no voltage to choke.

It's a little more complex than that with an emmisions carb and computer, but that's the basic idea, though.

I hear what your saying, but this is an on/off switch. The choke is needed till it runs a bit, not just till it starts.
When you kick down the pedal it sets the choke on. So how does the electric choke work then? I thought it had a bimetallic spring inside that an electrical current heated, hence the wire to it. Then a temp. sensor shut it down. All this being done by the idle control box on the pass. side fender, which preceded the underdash computer.

My understanding of this

is that it signals the dash check engine light when oil pressure is lost or doesn't exist, as in prior to starting the engine.
NAPA AUTO PARTS

I'm not saying your wrong, I'm just trying to learn as I go. I'm not a mechanic.... I just play one in my garage.:D

Like I said previously The 2 prong is either the idiot light or operates the sweep gauge. I've gone through several CJ harnesses and never seen any where tha shows it operating the choke. I'm not trying to be confrontational or sound like I know every thing so if you can show me on a schematic or where else it shows the choke please put it up or pm it to me.

As far as the operation of the choke you want the element to heat only when the engine is running. If it was wired to a ignition hot as soon as the key is turned On it starts heating up and opening.. So if you have a cold motor that you have to crank for a while to start it the choke will open before it should. Of if you turned it on to listen to the radio, or run a charger the same thing would happen so you want it powered by only when the engine is running. I can see where the oil pressure switch would provide that type of situation. My electric choke relay is wired to the thin brown wire that comes out of the alternator plug. This wire only gets power when the engine is turning also. Once it's warmed up the choke doesn't shut off. I've got a 10amp fuse inline between the relay and the. Home and have had no issues with it yet and I've run it for well over an hour.

With all that being said I'll toss out the I don't know every thig again and hope I'm spot on but look forward to some one correcting me if I'm not.

I was put off by it also but figured maybe it was a poor shot at humor.. I didn't want to drag it out. We all have a bad censor day, maybe he was lashing out uncontrollably in frustration because of a shoddy wired jeep.. We've all been there at least one time..

I'm pretty sure I was so mad at my steering column a few weeks ago I could have punched a nun.. Luckily I normally work alone so no one else gets the angry end of me... Except my rubber mallet.

Fantastic, that's what I needed to know. K comp is gone and yeah the carb is getting replaced too. I'm just going to go with the webber for now. The plan is next winter to rebuild a AMC 304 and put that in. Appreciate the info much. :chug:

Like I said previously The 2 prong is either the idiot light or operates the sweep gauge
The single wire sender is the gauge.

Two prong is an oil pressure switch. It can be used for many things beside a dummy light, and has been, by many manufacturers. Mine had a stock square pressure crimp, w/ "factory" duct tape connecting the choke as described. The manifold heater circuit "hot" ran parallel off the same splice, IIRC.

My Laredo has all the stock dash components, and as far as I can tell, it has NO "oil light" or "Engine light", just the speedo-mount 4wd and brake failure, and a separate Carb light. I didn't know CJ's had any dummy lights.

I've never seen a non-nuttered CJ, so maybe the oil light tied into the "Carb' light at one point?

I Don't see the point of the factory installing a switch it wasn't going to use. Like I said mine switch appeared to be stock wiring for a choke connection.

It didn't match the manual, and I didn't care. It was all coming out when I got my TBI, anyhow.
