Does your Cj have a 4wd indicator light in the speedometer? Mine are newer than yours but have a wire that goes back to the Transfer Case for the indicator.
 
I don't believe it does. It's a qtrac so light wouldn't mean much.

it looks like it should be either the 4wd indicator (which you said you dont have) or the back up light switch :chug:
 
We'll I will recheck. Perhaps it is for FWD but I have a qtrac and it has it's own indicator on top. That one is wired. And my backup lights work. Hmmmm
