I'm trying to reinstall my Transfer Case . I put a couple of threaded studs in the 2 top holes on the tranny so I had something to guide me in. I got the tc up and hanging on the studs and have slid it in to about an inch away from being mated up and everything has kinda stopped. Can't seem to push it on any farther. Was thinking of getting some longer bolts, pull the studs out and put the longer bolts in all the holes and try to pull it on by tightening the bolts.

Anybody got any other suggestions?

thanks, Bill

Have you tried (almost positive you have) turning the yokes a little back and forth?

Maybe putting the Transfer Case in different gears / stick positions?

maybe turn the motor and Transmission over a little too and see if everything will just line up?

It's possible (in my head) that with the studs holding you in the correct position (twisting wise) you're not able to twist and turn it in and then get it positioned and lined up correctly to the bolt holes after...

I wouldn't use the studs / bolts to tighten it up. There's a lot of "don'ts" regarding tightening things up by bolts, (for instance axle shafts, tranny to the engine, etc) as the general school of though I have observed is if it wont go in easy, when you force it you break something... Though I have never heard anything in particular about Transfer Case to tranny mounting tricks.

Just some thoughts bud. Can't wait til you're ready to wheel man.

JR - thanks for the suggestions bud.

I've tried most of those ideas already. I'm not quite far enough in that the gears are trying to mesh and holding me out. The yokes are still turning freely.

I think what's happening is that I'm not going in quite square and the tc drive gear on the tranny is binding on the hole where it goes into the tc. I can't get enough leverage to wiggle it around and push at the same time. My thought was to put bolts in all the holes and tighten slowly in a cross pattern and see if I could get it to slide in straight. But you're right, I sure don't want to force it and break something.

Any other ideas?

Bill

Try removing those two studs and getting the tcase to line up and slide in. Have the bolts within reach. If it slides together then you can hold it with one hand while the other starts the bolts. Put a thin coating of oil on the joining areas (not the mating flats) and don't forget a bead of silicone on the tranny mating flats before you lift it into place because I guarantee that as soon as it slides perfectly into place, that's when you'll remember you forgot the silicone sealer!!

Pa - Thanks for the advice. :notworthy: As soon as I pulled the studs out and was able to wriggle the tc around a bit more it slid right on. The studs did help me get it up to the tranny and started without dropping the tc back on my head, but were just binding everything up when I tried to slide it in place.

Thanks Again, Bill :chug:
