2001 Wrangler GM GenIII Vortec 5.3 v8 w/ 41L060E automatic
is a vortec 8 cyl a good motor to put into a 2001 jeep wrangler. been thinking about buying it. its mostly except the engine and tranny it seems to run great on the roads plenty of power its fuel injected

It depends on the Vortec model you are referring to. I am a big advocate of GM power because that is where my heart lays. I am doing a Gen III 5.3 liter swap into my Scrambler and I feel it it the most reliable V8 motor out there and it will match or do better on gas than the 6 cylinder. The older throttle body motors from the late 90's are not worth it for me. Everyone may have a different opinion but this one is mine.

Thanks for the reply,

may I ask another question, where on the motor is a stamped code telling what variation Vortec it is, all I know is it is a Gen III 5.7 Vortec, looks like a Chevy 350 block with Vortec heads and fuel injection. The Transmission I never heard of, both numbers and letters. It runs great, and no rust, solid body and it has a hard top with factory A/C, missing compressor belt and compressor hoses, checked the clutch it turns freely. I will post pics when I can. Wish you well on the Scrambler Mods, have a great week.

Generation III is the variation of Vortec which is basically an LS motor so I say you are good to go. A gen III motor looks a little different than a GEN I or II 350 block though. The older blocks could have the TPI intake or even a throttle body. It also could be a Gen II LT1 which isn't a bad mill either.

Thx, i'm reading up on this stuff. I think he said the tranny was a 4L60E Automatic, haven't looked it over its pooring rain here. I'm beginning to understand the newGen III motor. and feel better having support to fall back on. For a Jeep Wrangler it sure has the power and everything seems to run smooth fast shifts no wines or shimmy.

Thats the Transmission I plan to use as well. There are some weeknesses in that Transmission with the sun gear but overall it is very strong and reliable. For me personally it is THE motor to have for a newer V8 that gets a decent gas mileage per horsepower. I can't wait to get to tha tporion of my build which is coming up in the next few months I hope. Novak Adapters has a write up on how to install one in a Jeep which is pretty informative. Also if you go to Barnes and Noble and pick upa book called "How to Swap an LS motor into anything" written by S&D designs. It is a wealth of knowledge. I read this booka couple time over and feel very comfortable to do my swap.

Sorry for not replying the internet was down until about 30 min ago.

I will go by the bookstore and get a copy of the book, sure want to thank you for the good info, and I hope your swap out goes fast and clean. I'm retired now, but I always liked Jeeps since I first drove one in the Army (M151a1) got stuck with the "Gamma Goat" being low man, but I swore someday I'd own another Jeep. THX again looking forward to another reassuring conversation.:)
