these are on a 1970 CJ5 . Front axle differential housing has C313771 stamped on front and 27A stamped on back. Rear axle still has tag. Numbers on it are 941867, then under that 3-73S-41-11.

Can anyone tell me what they are? Thanks.

Front Axles:
From 1954 to 1965 the CJ5 used the Dana 25, then the Dana 27 replaced the Dana 25 and was used until 1971. From 1972 to 1983, the Dana 30 was used in the CJ5 .

Rear Axles:
From 1954 to 1970 the Dana 44 with two piece axle shafts were used in the CJ5 until about mid-1970 at which time a Dana 44 with one piece axle shafts replaced the original 2 piece. Production of the CJ5 with the one piece axle shafts ran until 1975. From 1976 until the 1983, the AMC 20 was used.

3-73 is the gear ratio and the 41-11 are the ring and pinion tooth count. Not sure what the S in there means.

If you have a Dana 30 front end it should look like this:

Your AMC20 rear should have a very round cover like this:

Dave, stickandtin has a 1970 CJ5 and 73CJ has it covered- a dana 27 up front and a 44 in the rear.

I would suspect the S is for standard open carrier. :)
