bad transmission

I have a stock '80 CJ7 , AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6, with a factory automatic Transmission . It ran great until I decided to tow it twice.. Not far but it was enough to ruin my tranny. Anyway, my questions r....(1)Was this a good reliable tranny, (2) is it worth biting my tongue and having it rebuilt, (3) Is there a better automatic out there that would bolt in without mods? You should have the Chrysler 999:Jeep Torque Flite 999 medium duty Chrysler 3 speed automatic transmissions

The 999 is a good tranny, light duty however. There are better ones out there if you want to spend the extra money to adapt one. The Chrysler trannys cannot be towed with the driveshaft hooked up as you found out. The back end of the tranny does not get lubricated if the engine is not running. You can beef these trannys up to hold up to good amount of abuse.
