1967 Cj6 Factory Perkins diesel all factory original.
I have my dad's 1967 CJ6 . He bought it new with a Perkins Diesel Diesel engine. I got to ride home with him from the dealer. I remember it having two 6 volt batteries, I think connected in a series. He wanted me to help him convert it to a 12 volt and he removed the batteries.
Now several years later I am getting it going again and need to know how to hook up the batteries. I think I want 12 volt if I can. Trying to decide.
I also would like an owners manual.
I appreciate your advice.

Okay, bottom line is you want to convert from a 6 volt system to 12 volts. Use one 12 volt battery not two six volt batteries.
Next everything that consumes electricity needs to be replaced on the jeep. That's not a big deal on the older jeeps. It's mainly just replacing the starter, alternator and the lights. You probably don't even have a radio but if you do you can either replace it or get a regulator that takes 12 volts and produces an output of 6 volts. No need to replace the switches. They will experience higher voltage but lower current. Find out what light bulbs you need. If you convert to 12 volts and don't replace the bulbs right away you will notice the lights will be much brighter. But they won't last long before they burn out.

EDIT: I know an alternator does not consume electricity. I meant to say replace electrical components except for switches.

If you haven't finished this yet, by your post you said it had two 6v batteries in series. Therefore your system is already 12V. Just put a 12v battery on and roll.

If they were connected parallel, then it is a 6v system. Which by doing a quick google search reveals that it was an original 6v system. In which case do what busa said, however, the 6v starter will be fine. I have done this to ford flathead V8s and they survive. The lights will blow as soon as you turn them on. Alternator will indeed, need to be replaced for a 12V version. Pay mind to output if you intend to run lots of lights or air or anything on your rig.

Most car companys converted to 12 volt in the mid to late 50s. Yours should have come from the factory as 12 volt.
