Have had a problem with my battery draining in my 86 CJ7 ,AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6 cylinder, was just charging battery and when I connected battery the engine started turning over on it's own. Any idea what could cause that?

Would appreciate your input.

the only way the starter has to engage is through the solenoid on the inside of the passener fender. that being said, have you changed any of the wiring on the starter solenoid? i suppose its possible for the solenoid to "hang up" in the on position.

Haven't changed any wiring, so it's possible for solenoid to hook up in the on position,i'll try switching it out.Thanks.

The solenoid on the inner fender has the big battery cables on it. It also has smaller wires connected.
I would remove all the wires except the cable to the battery and the one to the starter.
Hook up the battery again and see if it still tries to start. If it does then the solenoid is bad. If it doen't turn over then it's the ignition switch or the wiring.

i had the same problem and changed the solenoid and that fixed it.
