I feel like I rescued a beaten old mutt from an abusive owner...
Hey guys quick question here,

its about 9 pm over here and im working by florescent and citronella and im bout to lose my mind. I just got finished wiring up the dash harness after undoing the PO's work on all the harnesses on the body...I think.

Question is when i turn the headlights or parking lights on, the two directional indicators on the dash come on as well. Is this normal? Ive never had a car that had them on all the time, just when you actually use your directional. Hazards are working and the directionals function normally besides this...am i missing something???

Thanks alot!

Hey Mud... Some info would be really be helpful... What year CJ? Aftermarket or original column? Tilt or not? Duel or single flasher units...

Come one... We need info to help you out... :)

Sorry bout that was too busy throwin wrenches across the driveway...:censored:

Its an 84, non-tilt, original (i think Saginaw)column, dual flashers if you consider the hazards. I thought i cleared up most of the wiring issues but i cant understand why those dash indicators are on, doesnt seem normal to me...

Thanks again!:D

I suck at wiring, but suspect a grounding issue.

I just want to clarify something... make sure im not chasing a non-problem. The turn signal indicators in the speedo cluster arent supposed to come on and stay on when i tuen my head lights or parking lights on are they? Ive never had it like that on another car but dont know the normal operation of this one. It almost seems like they shoulds when i look at the schematic from the FSM.

or i just might be losing my mind...both are very solid possiblities at this point.

No they deff should not be on for any reason when headlights are turned on, So either a ground problem, bad turn signal switch, and/or wrong wire plugged into turn indicator light on dash. Someone will hopefully post the wiring diagram for the back of the dash (can't find mine to post).

Thanks for all the help guys. Turns out i wasnt low on fluid, i was just using the wrong one...BAHAHAHAA!

It actually was the ever elusive ground, or lack of actually. I had replaced the front parking light fixtures so i knew they were ok but it was the connectors that were corroded. So i soldered them in and cut out the connectors all together. Took some time but between what LongHorn posted and A FSM i found online i muddled (no pun)my way through it. Turns out if you have a bad ground for the fixture then the only place where that circuit finds a ground is through the dash indicators. I gotta be honest im an electrical engineer and it didnt jump out at me, seems the lovley people over at Jeep didnt feel the need to put all the circuit grounds on the schematic.

Anywhoozen, THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!!! :chug:

Glad you found the problem. I was so sick of chasing ground problems in jeeps over the years that when I did my current one, I tied every single component in the system to a second seperate ground run to a buss bar. Then tied the bar into the frame and engine. I can break a number of factory grounds and have no ill effect other than the one component that is broken. The bus is mounted onto the firewall, and was coated with chipcoat to seal it.

Hoo Hoo very cool.Yeh since this jeep saw a lot of abuse ALL of the wiring needed to be redone i later found out. Im on my last harness... i think. Because the fuel and temp gauge no longer work. so thats what ill be chasing tomorrow.

BTW, what is chip coat? haha and do you have a ny pics of your setup? sounds really cool, somethin i wouldnd mind doin while im in the thick of this mess.

Chip coat is like a heavy clear coating you spray on rocker pannels to protect paint from stone chips and dings. I can get a pik of the little buss junction tomorrow, but It's raining right now.
