So my brake lights and blinkers aren't working on my 73 CJ5 . Has a painless wiring harness. I found that there's a short to ground on both the rear blinker circuits but not on the brake circuit. Didn't check the front blinkers. The fuse for the blinkers was blown, although I was messing around in the fuse box and might have swapped out a blown horn fuse, I don't remember.

So I'm guessing that there shouldn't be a short to ground...

Not sure why the brKe lights aren't working, any thoughts? My plan is to try to track down the short to ground, hopefully finding someplace where it rubbed thought the wire insulation.

AeroMoto: I have a 74 CJ5 with a 12 circuit universal Painless fuse block... The way I wired my setup is my tail lights have dual filament bulbs... One filament is for the tail light running light, the other filament is for the turn/brake lights...

Unless your rear tail lights are separated between turn, brake, and running lights, the same fuse for the turn the signal flasher is also the same power used for the brake lights...

Thanks Mick, I actually figured out my problem though. My front L&R turn signals had a "short to ground." I followed the 2 wires and there was a wire spliced in that powered the blinker indicator in the speedo. And all the bulbs are grounded to the speedo itself, so that's why I thought there was a short to ground. I replaced both the flashers for the turn signal and hazards and it was fixed. I didn't know that the brake lights on mine went through the turn signal circuit. Learn something everyday I guess.
