Being old and unwilling to simply follow a trend I unually look for a logical reason for doing things or changing what has worked for long periods of time. I'm not sure how long they have been popular, but what is the logical reason for the long angled pipe sticking out like a sore thumb on front bumpers? Naturally I understand the brush guard, cow catcher hell for strong front bumper guards seen for decades on off road vehicles, but the logic behind these way out in front rainbow arch bumper guards fail me. Do they allow for better winching? Are they some how stronger? Is it the BAJA trend so why not on a Jeep? I've gotta say, they look cool but? ....

supposed to be for this…. but you know how fads are

Okay, that sorta makes sence to me. A lot more than I actually expected.

Hedgehog... If go to YouTube.com and search poison spyder there is a clip from the owner of poison spyder. It is called product spotlight: BFH front bumper. Check it out. Of coarse it is a sales pitch but it is a pretty good explanation of the design and engineering behind them and why the build them like they do. I have been doing a bunch of reading and searching on bumpers and it is a real good clip and explanation of what you are asking. I wanted to try and link it here for you but I am not figuring that out. Easy to find on YouTube search.

Yeah, you see lots of them on the East Coast...makes a good place to hang your wet laundry/beach towel to dry. I like a simple, short, 2"X4" rectangular tube bumper with shackle points. If I get "artistic" I'll taper the ends and box it all in. Easy to make, easy to replace.

I've just gotta say, if my 4 wheeling requires a nose stand move that's a maneuver I simply don't need to make or a place I don’t need to be. The lengths people will go t just tear up their equipment amazes me sometimes.

:chug: I like to look of the smaller/ simpler bumpers as well some rectangle and D rings call it a day

Just looked back at the "Stinger" thread. Hadn't read that one before. Funny, the beginning poster worded his thread reamrkably similar to mine. I hadn't actually seen the BIG stingers before, didn't surprise me to see that they exist. Bigger isn't always better.

I agree , don't like the big stingers as far as looks. I do like this one they call it a bruiser bar or something like that anyway. Just up enough that it kind of protects the winch.
I have seen some video where the are rock crawling and the come up to a ledge with the stinger and it actually works kind of like a ramp. Back tires push as the front tires come off the ground and it a cully walks up the stinger and bumper until it gets the front end high enough for the front tires to grab the ledge to pull you up.

HedgeHog that's a nice bump. What thickness of metal did you use? Rod

I wondered a few times myself what they were for. I wouldn't have one before I knew what they were for, and I sure don't need one now. I know a few guys that could use one of them mounted around their head when they take to drinking.......:chug:

Rod - I used 3/16" on this one. The recovery points and the reciever go all the way through and welded all around. The notch for the winch is also closed and welded all around. The rear bumper hasn't been made yet, it will be 1/4" steel. The original to me tire carrier will be used with one exception. The hinge will be replaced with a GREAT tapered bearing hinge a member here was good enough to send to me. It will be similar to the front with reciever hitch and recovery points. Frame attachment will be the rreal hurtle in that one.

I had my cj in a spot were I could have used a stinger the other day.was not intentional just a lot bigger drop than expected. I don't really care for the look of them but I no what they do now.. lol..
