I have been reading that a breaking in a new camshaft is critical. You must lubricate the lobs with a special lubricant and ensure your RPM does not go below 1500 for 20 minutes. I was watching a young fellow install a Comp cam in a chevy truck on U-tube. He didn't use any lubricant on the cam and was idling it up and down. So is it that critical to break in a new cam?? Or will he suffer an early failure?

Flat tapet cams require a break in, roller cams do not.

What type of cam were you watching? Post the video URL... :)

As CJ said you must break in a flat tappet cam if you want it to last.

thats a roller motor. you need to do exactly as you described originally, except i hang mine up around 2k rpms and use a break in additive in the oil. lucas, comp cams, crane cams all make their own although it doesn't matter which you use as long as it has ZDDP in it. read this from crane cams website CraneCams

Yep. flat tappet cams need a break in (the lifters need to seat on the cam lobes).
