The original cj came with no crossmember and this gear box sitting in the tub. We purchased a crossmember from a guy who said that the piece belonged to a CJ, but as you can see when I put it on the frame it appears to be 4 inches too wide.
Is this the wrong crossmember? If not I guess I could fabricate my own by cutting the sides and using tubing and a skid plate to make the width correct, but I'm not sure how deep to make it.
As for the gear box, when I pulled the drivetrain with the engine hoist I thought it looked complete with Transmission and Transfer Case (at least to these novice eyes). What is the gear box for?

Early 70s skid plates are separate from the crossmember, it is a later skid plate or from something other than a CJ.

You can see the skid plate on the right and the crossmember on the left of my 72.

Sorry, to clarify its a 72 to 79 plate for sure. It came from a CJ that used a Dana 20 Transfer Case originally. When you deal mostly with 80s Cjs thats an early one. :D

my 74 with the Dana 20 (and T-15 ) has the 2 piece like CJ posted. Uncles 72 is the same.

Then it must be a 76 and up deal. My 78 CJ5 had a plate just like that. If it started at 76 that would get rid of all those crazy different 70 -75 conglomerations you guys seem to like. :)

Parts...is parts! Where is the rest of your jeep? Carrying it around on a trailer doesn't count as running. :D

So it should fit onto my frame correct? Do I just need to fabricate my own or is there a way I can make this one fit?

which of your jeeps are you working on? and what drivetrain are you running... (sorry If I missed in the begining post...) Tranny / Transfer Case

Thats not the skid I thought it was. :o I looked around a bit and its different. The one I pictured earlier is what you'll need for your Cj ( either the 79 or 85 ) as long as you are using the Dana 300 Transfer Case . Below I pictured what you will need if your going to use a Dana 20 Transfer Case . Sorry for all the confusion.

Then you need the first one I pictured guaranteed.

Anyone want a skid plate? Hardly been used and only dropped twice.

I wonder if the one you have is from a J-truck? It looks so similar except for the width between the frame rails.
