Help me out guys. two issues, probably seperate, but maybe not.

1. Idle is high. Tac normally reads just over 1 at idle and is now idling at 2. I ran some fuel system cleaner through her and hit her with carb cleaner but no help.

2. Volts are dropping when I accelerate and then randomly spiking.

I am not losing power and she feel normal, but obviously something is up. I am nearing wits end.

Can you hear the RPMS runnign higher or are you just going by the tach? A little over 1000 rpm at idle is high even for a 4 banger. (I think). I would verify the actual RPMS by another means.

As for the voltage, clean your connections and make sure they are tight. IF its still doing it pull the alt and have it tested. I take mine to my local advance discount or autozone. If the knuckle head behid the counter doesnt seem like he knows whats going on or not the brightest I take it to the other store. Ive had one store tell me that the altenator was bad but he seemed a little shaky on it. I went to auto zone and it checked out good. Come to find outthere was an error in the first stores machine.

Also they can tell you whats bad if it fails and most of the time just that part can be replaced for very cheap. If the brushes look worn throw in a new set. I havent put more then $20 into a new altenator in years once i figured out how to open em and replace the bad parts. Thay are kinda like a house water heater.. if its not leaking it can be repaired. As lond as the bearing in the alt is good ther is not reason to replace it.. most of the time

Since the tach is electrical and the alt is screwy check your grounds too. Ive seen people go as far as running a ground wire to the distributor hold down.

Good luck

Thanks, the alt is just a few years old but I will go over my connections again. She just recently had all new wiring done, but things do come loose. It just gets so frustrating when she is fine one day and doing this goofy stuff the next.

As for the idle, I am going by sound and the tach. I just KNOW when she sounds wrong (high or low), but it is tough for me to communicate that so I am using the tach as a reference for those I am asking questions of. I just got done fiddling around with the carb a bit and things just seem to be sticking (you will have to excuse me as I can figure out how things work but never know proper names etc and my books for reference are MIA). Maybe I need to spray some carb cleaner on there??

I am by no means the carb master. There are really a few thangs that can make your idle change like that. Make sure your choke is opening all the way up and you high idle lever is returning all the way. Next reason could be a problem with your accelerator cable. With the motor off open the choke all the way and make sure the butterly on the bottom is completely closed. Or you can start the jeep, unhook the cable from the carb and see if it idles down. If it does there a cable problem. also make sure your return spring has not broke, or come loose. Thats about all the ideas Ihave.. Have you tried to adjust your idle screw down some? maybe check your timing?

Thanks a bunch, I will have to wait for the husband to get home to check those out with me so I have an extra set of hands. BUT I did just blast the tar out of it with so super duper strength cleaner, I am really hoping it is just gunked up by the desert and this will fix the issue (can we say WISHFUL THINKING!?)

As for the electrical issue when I started my grab and wiggle routine to check my connections the plug to my alternator just dropped off! Which means when hubby surprised me with my winch he wasn't diligent while reattaching connections

I am about to run out to the store and back to test her out and see whats what, I have a feeling I better buy a 6 pack while I'm there...

I'd buy 2

I think I will take that piece of advice as well.....

Well the electrical issue is SOLVED!!

As for the carb she keeps swapping between idling normal and high, but the normal seems to be more often than it was, maybe she just needs a bit more gunk knocked loose...(still wishing)

You are probably right but make sure you have a good return spring and that nothing is hanging up.

I am going to check that out tomorrow, the wind picked up and I don't have a garage, just a car port. Thanks a bunch.

Was the alt connection the problem?

my DARLING husband didn't make sure the plug from the alt to the battery lead was fully plugged in after putting on my winch.

that'll do it everytime. remember K.I.S.S
as for the carb, what do you have? I had a holley 2 barrel and it sucked.
I swapped it out for a MC 2100. Could be a float sticking or carb leaking down. Mine was dripping gas as I pulled it off and was walking inside.

The carb is the original rochester, it is a rebuilt one. I am contemplating a new carb (hubby said I can have it for an anniversary gift) BUT with the 151ci engine i don't know what carb would be good to replace it with.
