I have an 82 CJ7 with a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 6 cylinder. I just bought this jeep and previous owner had carb rebuilt new gas tank and an electric fuel pump put on. Jeep runs great on the highway. But when I go off road and I am traveling at low speeds I can smell gas and engine sputters and dies. I had trouble getting it restarted and when I did it blew a bunch of black smoke out the tail pipe. It seems to be getting too much gas when going slow. Jeep will idle fine it only happens when in gear and traveling slow if I get the engine up to 1700+ rpm it is fine. Any ideas?

what carburetor??

My best idea is EFI.

The electric fuel pump may need a regulator.
I just installed an electric fuel pump that puts out 95 gph and 7 psi. I didn't need a regulator but if your pump puts out higher pressure then it may overpower the float valve and flood your carburetor. It's not a problem on the highway because the engine can use all the gas the pump puts out.
