have an 86 CJ7 with AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and original Carter. Runs :dung:ty, black smoke, running rich and coughs and sputters under acceloration. Die's also.

new plugs, wires good gas clean air and gas filter. What do you suggest i look at or do?

not opposed to a new carb but what works.

this jeep is primarily used in the woods or short trips to town. its my fun jeep thats not been too much fun lately

If you have a carter bbd check the idle mixture screws by turning them in till lightly seated and counting the turns it takes to seat them, DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THEM YOU CAN DAMAGE THE NEEDLE VALVES. They both should be about the same amount out. 2 1/2 turns out is a good starting point. Also check this out Easy Fix for Jeep 258 Carter BBD Idle Problem:)
Not sure on the carter yfa. May be the same not sure.

Rebuilding is also pretty easy and the kit cost about $25. But be aware I found that the new needle valve and seat for the float is shorter then the old one at least mine was, and the old has two washers the new has one. It took me 3 time readusting the accelerator pump linkage and metering rods to figure this out, and stop the carb from running the bowl dry tring to drive to town. But with trail and error of adjusting the float I got it running right as rain. GOOD LUCK and let us know how it goes.:chug:
