Hi im rebuilding my cj. getting to the stuff i dont know now!
Like when trying to start will fire if you hold ignition on ie with starter running.
not when you release key tho?
Have had it running with blue wire of coil on positive of battery?
Oh and some rpm wires arnt connected yet will this cause a problem?

I'm thinking you might have the starter solenoid wired incorrectly, this is an underhood wiring diagram for my '86, I hope it might help. It is easier to read if you print it out.

Hi thankyou i will have a look.it may be that who had this before added lots of new wires so not sure whats good or not. Included in this problem i cant start it unless starter solenoid is earthed at the in park terminal maybe this has to do with it as well then. thank you again :)

Make sure your coil has power when the ignition is turned on.

Generally, this wire comes from the I (ignition) terminal on the starter solenoid.

Maybe you have the wire to the coil on the S (starter) terminal along with the wire that gets power when you turn the key to crank/start.
