I have a 71 CJ5 and recently bought a tub and am not sure of the year and it has no vin plate. Any suggestions on figuring out the year so I can complete. Thanks

Where is the gas tank filler located? I have a 68' and 72' so I might be able to help. There are some changes to the firewall too, along with the dash. Send somemore detailed info about your tub, and I'm sure if I can't help here someone else can. Good Luck with your project! :) If you need pics of my 68' or 72' tub, just ask and I'll post them.

Just post pictures anyway :D you know you want to show them off!

If you want to see pics CoreyYoung they're in my gallery. But I must warn you, my projects aren't that pretty yet! Most of my gallery consists of bits and pieces of what I hope to be able to put back together and hit the trails with. :D

Better then my project :chug: so beers to you!

gas tank location
under seat or rear?

that is a later tub then, all 5s through 75 had tailgates, it may be a aftermarket tub also, does it have embosed jeep logo?
also measure the mounting holes and the holes on your tub

It has embossed jeep on one side

Now that’s interesting.
It would appear we have undergone a bit of body modification.
No tail gate throws me.
a factory replacement side panel on an after market tub??:wtf:

Weve been down this road in a thread awhile back. My tub is stock with no tailgate. Like Baja said though 75 and earlier all had tailgates. Mines a 78. The side that has no Jeep embossed on it is probably the patched side.

I would have to say it is an after 75 tub with a patch on it. I would not be able to tell what exact year as I do not know the years you could get a tub without a tailgate without a search. I will say that it really does not matter as all 76 and later tubs fit the same frame.

Your probably right Pete, would have to look for the body work, crumpled floor pan or something like welds other than spot welds on one side. but for the sake of the thread, the tub fits and with no Vin I would say it can be what ever you want it to be?

I agree if we've gotten to the point where its decided the tub fits. Up to '72 the CJ5 wheelbase was 81 in. After that it was bumped up to 84 in. for the rest of the production run. Thats gotta be noticable right? 3 in. of wheelbase? As far as I know all other tub dimensions stayed the same so maybe its not. :dunno:

that bump was in the front clip, I believe the body stayed the same. I am almost certain of it. As far as the 76 change I csnnot tell you exactly wherer that is effecting the tub, I am looking for that some time today.

I think this is correct. Everywhere I look the tub dimensions are the same. Basically on the newer 76 and up you lose the ultra cool side fill gas tank ,(tank under seat models) and in some cases the tailgate. From what I gather the front clip was stretched to make the AMC 232 i6 and eventually the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l fit. Then the CJ5 was dropped in 83 cause of "rollover" ratings.

Yes, in 70 when AMC bought Jeep, they decided to keep the lineup the same till they had engineered a few changes, One of those changes was to drop the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 , Buick was trying to buy the castings back, and add one of the strait sixes they had in production. This did not mean much except to stretch the front clip and frame. They also wanted to get rid of the D18 t case for the Dana 20 and share center pumpkin axles they produced with the universal line (CJs). Ok, so they stretched the frame and added a new front clip 3 inches longer, the 1976 changes were done to update a lot of issues that Kaiser never saw a reason too. Until the late 80s the universal platform was seen as a work and farm vehicle, If it was not for the forward thinking marketing campaign put together by AMC, marketing the Jeep as a fredoom machine, we would not have a wrangler today as sales were beginning to tank. We have to thank AMC for convincing us that Jeeps were cool to own and going outdoors in a 4x4 was the manly thing to do.

Kinda makes you look at the new marketing being put forward by FIAT own Jeep. If you see they are pushing that owning a wrangler is a freedom decision where you can get out and enjoy the world around you.
I like it. See good things coming out of it.
