Picked up CJ7 frame, has crack/rust just behind ds engine mount, looking to grind out and weld in a patch, experience on this or alternative would b welcome

There is a common crack location above the front spring hangar on the drivers side, which happens with a 4 inch lift and lots of wheelin'. Welding works just fine, at least mine has.

Thanks for the feed back, like to hear other folks fixes work.

If it were me...if it is just a crack and not a rusted out spot...I'd grind a bevel into the crack, then weld it up flush with a full-pen weld. (that's why I'd grind a bevel nearly all the way through) Then I would fishplate the frame at the cracked area. Most security IMHO.

:)A Picture would be great...........as mentioned , most conventional fixes are to bevel the crack and then slowly weld it up. If the flange is what is cracked then perhaps an insert may be a good Idea.......if it's boxed there then a surface weld and a fish plate as mentioned would also work...............Pictures!

Ive repaired rotted out c channels by cutting it back to good, welding in 1/8" angle iron to reform the C then welded flat plate to the angle iron.. lots of rosette welds. I also reinforce them when done with plates on the out side to help keep it from coming back

If yours is just a crack I would do as mentioned above.. bevel grind, weld and reinforce. thats as long as the metal behind it is solid enough to hold a weld like that.
