clacking taping knocking sound question

My jeep has a clacking taping knocking sound when cold (I know its hard to describe the sound) . But if i give it a little gas the sound is gone. And when it comes back its not constant, it comes and goes. When it warms up the sound is all gone. The motor is strong, has about 30-35psi oil pressure when cold and around 15 when warm. And when its warm the motor sound as good or better than most new motors (or rebuilt ) and its good and strong.
Sorry its a 82 i6 all factory nut all emissions stuff gone thanks for the help

Pull the valve cover and check your valve clearances.......

Thats where I would start looking too.

I might use a mechanics stethoscope and listen around the engine to pinpoint the noise.

Might have a problem with a lifter in there also.

Along with what has already been suggested, there might be a problem with contaminents in the engine clogging up your lifters or they could just be worn out. I would suggest a high detergent oil like a Shell Rottella T 15w-40. Installing an oil drain plug will give an idea of just what is in there metal wise when the oil is changed.
