My CJ7 makes a clickety clacking sound from the rear end when I'm slow rolling. Doesn't matter whether it's in gear, out of gear, brakes on or coasting. The only difference is that it starts after the ol' girl has warmed up. I've replaced the drive shaft u-joints as part of my preventive maintenance, but I'm thinking this might be a wheel bearing issue. What say the brain trust?

That sounds feasible since not brake related or speed / load dependent...

Only one way to know for sure, open the girl up and see what she looks like inside...

Clickety-clack is a bad sound for a bearing to make though...

If you don't see anything wrong with them, look at it as a good time to re-pack them with grease.

Then open up the carrier and see if something wrong with the gears inside.

See if the rear backing plates are wet with oil.
Make sure the rear pinion nut is tight.
IF your still run'n the OEM(POS)2-piece axles. Make sure the axle nut is SUPER TIGHT, as in 200+ ft/lbs torque.
You SURE it's com'n from the rear?? Noise travels------

From what you describe; I would check the U-Joints (universal joints) on your rear driveshaft. :chug:

Wouldn't hurt to pull the drum and look to see if anythings rubbing, although it would be a long shot. I once had a a similar sound but only in reverse...one of the drum springs wasn't seated completely and it popped off after I installed the drum etc. Made that click clack sound. Didn't do it in any forward gears.

My other thought since I just hunted my last clickety-clack sound last month was that it might be your center cap that goes through the rim (don't know what those things are called)...in your pic they looked bolted on, but on mine they just slide in and the pressure from the rim holds them in place. Mine was loose from age and made the same sound under slow rolling. I checked everything and racked my brain on it until one day with the top off I was listening too it and it just dawned on me all of a sudden.

Hope it's an easy fix when you do find it :)

Somebody put a zip-tie on my driveline once.......:wtf:

But all joking aside, start at the outside and work your way in. You wont know if it's a pinion bearing until you pull the carrier. Hopefully it wont have to go that far....

Thanks for the suggestions. Once I get some time to start breaking her down, I'll let you know what I find.
