So I finally got the jeep running nice. Tuned my new carb and ready to hit the road. After driving down the street I started having trouble shifting into gear, and by the time I drove back to the house I couldn't put the CJ into gear with the clutch fully pressed to the floor. Is this a clutch linkage problem? It seemed to be getting progressively worse for a while, so I am wondering if it's been coming out of it's "happy place" for a while. Anything I'm missing? What do you guys think?

You need to make sure you have about 1.25 inches of free play to the clutch pedal before you start to disengage the clutch. If not adjust the part marked with the yellow dot.

Actually here's a better picture.
Look for the part that says "adjuster"

Thanks BUSA. So does this sound like a clutch issue to you? Where about is the adjuster (where do I look for that little part, not too much experience with transmissions, but willing to learn).

Crawl under your jeep. Here's a picture but it was not shot from underneath. The adjuster is in the middle of the pic. It screws and unscrews from the shaft to adjust.

But now that I think about it I think something may have come loose. Make sure all the bolts are tight for the linkages. There is a bracket on the bellhousing that may be loose.

Great pic. Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like I've got some troubleshooting to do tomorrow.

Tried adjusting the thing both ways (no free play and more free play than I started with) and I still can't get the darn thing to go into gear with the engine running. Any other ideas?

My son in law just had a similar problem. His clutch disc was simply worn out. Could be the same for you. It was a gradual thing. Clutch catching higher ( pedal ) and higher, then would slip every now and then.......then, wouldn't go in gear. Replaced all the clutch components......now perfect.

What ended up being the problem/solution?

His problem isn't that it engaging, the clutch isn't disengaging. As Dave said, I bet:

1 - The adjuster lock nut is looe and he's lost his adjustment
2 - One of his beackets have worked themselves loose
3 - The plastic bushings in the bell crank have totally let go, from the suddenness that is not likely the problem.

All of it is a relatively easy fix

My bet if the linkage is good will be the springs on the pressure plate broke. BTDT--

What does the plastic bushings inside the z-bar/bell crank look like? Anyone have a picture? I bought a new bell crank but not the innards.
