1986 CJ7 with 4 cyl. AMC150, five speed. ALL STOCK, even the wheels.
OK, been beating my head against the wall because I pulled the thermo, dropped in hot water, opened right up, stuck it back in and jeep continued to overheat. Had two people tell me pull it out and run the jeep, see if it gets hot. Didn't do it. Thought i had a blown head gasket cause pump was new, thermo opened, fan OK. FINALLY before I pulled the radiator I pulled the thermo and ran the jeep without it. Whall-LA! Not over heating anymore!!! This thermo works just fine in a pot of hot water. It's a 180 degree thermo. Is this the wrong temp for my jeep? what is the corect temp thermo for a 1986 CJ7 with the 4 cyl AMC 150 ? Thanks in advance guys.

Are you installing it upside down?

The boiling point of water is 212° F ;)
A 180°-190° will, of course, open up in boiling water.....but it doesn't necessarily mean it is functioning within the calibrated range.

what this means is your boiling water may actually be well over the 212° boiling point as it opens your thermo. That could equal your engine reaching over-heating temp before it pops the thermo.

Another theory is your cooling system is seriously mucked up....and the engine temp running ok with the thermo out may be the difference in added circulation (thermo out) vs. the restriction provided with the thermo in and open.

Not sure what you mean by upside down but I'm installing it with the spring side toward the engine. Is that what you mean?
Yes that is what I mean and you are doing it right. I would get a new one drill a small hole in the flange and try that.
