Hey Gang,
We had an exhaust leak between the intake and the exhaust manifolds. As usual the project snowballed form there. The exhaust manifold has a significant crack at the exhaust pipe mounting flange. I purchased a used manifold but it is also cracked in the same place although not as bad. I assume this is a common problem. Is it worth getting repaired or should I spring for a new one? I can get one on ebay for $147 shipped.
I'll attach pics of the old manifold.

Also, we bought a intake manifold gasket kit which contains four gaskets (exhaust manifold, intake manifold, exhaust donut and the square gasket between the intake and exhaust) however when we removed the manifolds there was only the exhaust gasket. Am I supposed to use both gaskets or is one discarded? Pics below:

TIA,

If you can find an 80s intake and exhaust you can eliminate that damned donut gasket, have a water cooled aluminum intake manifold, use a 2 bbl carb if you don,t already have one, have the proper intake if and when you go with a 4.0 head and get away from that silly married manifold thing.:D

and yes, you use both of the gaskets.

Really? From what year? We have the stock 2 barrel but want to upgrade to a weber one of these days. Not really looking for more power (it's my 16 yr old's) right now but wouldn't mind more effeciency.

If you decide to have it repaired, make sur they repair guy knows what he is doing. Cast metal must be heated before welding and heated dueing the cool down period so as not to cool too quickly. This is tricky if you have never done this before. Rod

anything after 81 , I think.

I would not even think about welding, been there done that. At very best you will have a manifold that eats doughnuts, literally.:D

the coolant hose fittings and the CTO switch. It you decide to make it water cooled, I would.

remember: nothing is ever as easy as it first looks.:D

Pete, are those water jacket holes threadded or is it a press fit??

Their threaded so thats easy enough.

cto?

is it cto or just ct switch? coolant temp switch. primarily controls the thermostatic air cleaner.

I know what your talking about. I'll see if I have one laying around. :)

Ok. We got the intake and new exhaust manifold installed but we ran into a hitch. The carb linkge bolted to the old exhaust manifold and there is no provision for that on the later model exhaust. I am assuming I can use a 1984 or so linkage set-up. Is that the case? You can see what I am referring to below:

I am going to say yes. It has been a long time. It was pretty easy because I didn't have to get really creative until the MC2150. Go with the later model linkage.:D
