You should NEVER have your cj in 4 wheel drive on a dry surface, bad things can happen.
cj's have gear driven transfer cases and they bind up when either the front or rear can't slip some.

Thanks. The problem arises on patchy snow covered roads and I hit a dry spot. The spot is short, then back on snow. I'll stop looking for problems in the DT. Thanks again!
