I removed the rear axle shafts to replace the outer bearing, did not touch the diff and when I went to re-install the shafts one side will not go in far enough? Any suggestions?
Sorry I should have added that it is a '64 CJ5 . with a Dana 44 axle. Everything was working fine in the axle when removed, I just needed to put on new brakes and wanted to check the bearings out. New bearings have been installed as well a new seals. When the axle goes in it stops 3/8" from complete insertion. It hits the center pin apparently, but nothing has internally been touched or changed since I pulled it apart. Thanks
I am not sure about the older D44s, but on my later model the axles are different lengths. So if yours are like that also, then you might have the long axle in the short side.
Check axle splines to make sure no twist in them.
If you have a powerlok, the button for end of the axle to ride up against could have stuck to the end of the axle shaft upon removal and dropped inside the axle tube. Look inside the tube with a flashlight to confirm.
Lastly, rotate the opposite side slightly when trying to insert the axle shaft.
My memory is a little vague on the thrust buttons on the end of the axles.
As was mentioned the power lock uses them, not sure on open carrier. As I recall with the open diff. there is side gears, spider gears ,pin for spider gears and a thrust block. A good look with a light will let you know. mike
It does seem to be the thrust buttons that are causing the issue. We removed the diff and cleaned everything, the thrust buttons and the shaft they ride on are moving back and forth freely. When we reassembled, the opposite side that was going in fine is now the one that will not go in all the way. It is the same distance as the other side- 3/8". Thanks to all for suggestions.
