I'm just now getting all my dash put back together (long story ). I'm needing to know what the order is of the dash pad and cowl seal AND I noticed the cowl seal has many holes for screws yet the frame only has enough for the dash pad and my heater vent (I think it was all being held together by all the black gunk someone put under the cowl seal)?!?!?! Am I missing some holes somewhere? :dunno: :D

If I remember right, there's only 8 screws that hold the dash pad in place. Four in the dash itself and four more between the windshield and the cowl. As for the cowl gasket, it isn't secured in there by any means, it just needs to be aligned correctly and then the windshield closed.

BTW, when I changed my cowl gasket, getting the windshield closed again was a huge pain in the :censored:....

My 78 does not have the "crash pad" as Jeep calls it, but my cowl gasket is secured to the bottom of the windshield frame with 6 or 8 screws.
The manual Say's
1. position crash pad on instrument panel.
2. Install attaching screws and nuts.
3. Install radio, if equip.
4. Install ashtray and retainer
5. Install glove box
6. Install inst. cluster
7. Install weatherstrip and windsheild

my cowl seal is attached to the bottom of the windshield frame, the dash bolts to the tub the dash pad screws to the top of the cowl and to the actual dash itself. then the windshield folds back up with the gasket attached on my 85. so its dash, dash pad, all bolted to the tub, then windshield folded up with gasket attached

SO basically to sum it up I need alot of hands to hold everything together while I screw the pad and seal in AND its a pain in the :censored: to get the windshield back up! OH great! OK SOOO who wants to come help?? Any takers???

its not hard at all, i'm assuming you are reinstalling the dash if so just get the dash over the steering column then hang the passenger side, then hang the driver side, after you get the dash bolted in set your dash pad up on top of the dash hold it with one hand put one screw in the top near the defrost vent that will hold it in place, then put the rest of your screws for the dash pad in after you've got that far reattach the seal to the bottom of the windshield and fold it up, you're done

i forgot to mention if you need to install the gauges i put them in after i got the dash over the steering column and used a bunjee cord wrapped around the roll bar and hooked to the dash to hold it up so i could reinstall everything
