My dash pad is in great shape but the wrong color. I tried the plastic coat paint and it's already starting to come off. I wiped it down with starting fluid and rag to prep it. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

I wonder if you need to prime it in some way. rough it up a bit with sand paper maybe before painting?

I've never had any luck painting anything rubber or flexible. The factory never paints those things either. The plastic itself is colored.
Maybe someone else has had some luck and will chime in but my sugestion is to buy a dash pad the correct color.

I would call a local upholstery shop and see if they had any tricks.

Starting fluid? As said results are iffy at best but you might try roughing up the surface as Vvajk said and trying a product more in line with painting, I am looking at a can of PPG acryli-clean that I have and it's main ingredient is naptha and that would be readily available to prep with.
Prime too.

I wouldn't think that starting fluid is a very good cleaning solution for paint prep. I just painted my dash pad and for prep I used palmolive and scrubbed it with a scotch pad. Make sure you don't touch it at all after you wash all of the soap off of it. The paint I used is made by Seymour, not sure where to get it. But I have also had really good luck using the Lowes brand plastic paint.

So far its holding up really well

Ya the starting fluid prep was to remove any armoral type stuff. I know it can be done because I had a Dodge sport bumper(plastic) painted and it's held up. I'll try to find a primer first and then try the plastic paint. The directions for the paint did say to wash with soap and water. I may also try the upholstery route. When I do find out what works best the hard door inner panels are next. Thanks for all the advice so far.

Good luck.
Were the heck is Hoopa?
I've been to Hopland but not Hoopa.

Hoopa is located 1 hour east of Eureka and 2.5 hours west of Redding. I can also be in Grants pass, Oregon in 2.5 hours. In the middle of 6 Rivers National forest Most Big foot sightings in North america.
I got on a Auto body supply web sight and found some vinyl, plastic paint that looks pretty good. Surface prep seems to be my problem.

You should use SEM vinyl and plastic dye. I did my hardtop in this stuff its perfect

SEM Products - Catalog
Good to know.
You used that on your hard top? With all the weather, wind and rain that a hard top gets that's a good test. How long ago did you paint it?

Sure its flexible and flat finished like the OEM stuff. Austin Jeeps uses the SEM product on all of their restoration jobs. Paint fades out and doesn't stick as well as this. I would definitely use it on your dash. Also they have primer as well.

That's the stuff I was looking at. Thanks for the hard top info. That was going to be the next project. Any idea how much would be needed for the hard top? Thanks

I just did mine over the weekend. I used mineral spirits to clean with and then painted after a few hours with the vinyl spray paint from auto zone.

Mine was done in a spray booth. Not sure how much they used, a quart should do it though. Also did the inside in white. I stillneed to reinstall the glass. I bought all new weather stripping and stainless hinges. I will take pics this weekend . Exterior was done in Camel

I used denatured alcohol and the palmolive method mentioned above with good results. I also used the rustoleum for plastic.
RustOleum.com
Check it out no primer required.
