My dad thinks I'm an idiot for having patience with this CJ :D

I got her running again yesterday after I fixed the Transmission cooling line (had to rebuild the entire cooling system and fuel lines) and have been enjoying trouble free driving all day long in the awsome CJ with 70* weather, no top, no doors.....BUT

I come home after all my errands and park her in the driveway, shift her into park and turn it off, no problems.

I come back out 1 hour later to move the CJ into the garage and I fire her up, shift into D and nothing happens, it doesn't jerk into gear or anything, RPMs don't drop, if I rev it, it just acts like I'm in nuetral.

So I try reverse and the engine lags just a little bit and I hear this crunching/grinding noise (almost like grinding gears in a stick shift) but she still acts like shes in nuetral, I try to put it back in park and get out and the CJ rolls forward....so it refuses to shift into any gear.

I checked the shift linkage and its good to go, the shift rod going into the Transmission rotates as I shift into gears, so I know the problem is internal  since I'm dropping the pan soon to change the filter anyways, this makes a perfect time to figure out what the hell ruined my day :(

any ideas where to start with this one? I'm totally new to autos.

It's really hard to tell what happened without tearing apart the Transmission ...

The thing about autos is that are mostly bullet proof until they start to self destruct! It only takes a small amount of :dung: in the system to create a cascade affect...

It sounds like a plate or something let loose that contaminated the system.

Just remember that if the Transmission id Fubar - you need to replace and or clean the lines and the cooler - you don't want that :dung: getting back into the system...

this may sound dumb, but make sure the tc did not get knocked out of gear somehow

oh. my. god.

you do not know how stupid I feel right now, I totally forgot I was screwing with the Tcase lever before I got out.

I had it between 4HI and Nuetral, I put it back in 4HI and she works now, but it looks like I damaged the Tcase because it makes a horrible noise now when shifting into Park from Reverse, but I'd rather rebuild the Tcase than the tranny

thanks a ton for mentioning that :notworthy:

now I need to go punish myself somehow, poor CJ lol.

Old Dog beat me to the punch, I think most of us has done that a time or two :D. What kind of noise when shifting into neutral ? grinding, popping?

i have had my tc pop out twice and been like wtf. im sure we all have been there done that.

is it a ratchiting sound, like the parking paw trying to engage?
