1984 Jeep CJ
I live in the socialist state of PA and we have restrictive inspection regulations.

It is not lawful to operate a Jeep without doors because the inspection code states that if a vehicle was sold without doors, it can't be operated without them.

Any idea if Jeep sold the CJ (1984) without doors?

CJ5s were sold without doors. Actually doors cost extra.
I might be wrong but I think all CJ7s were sold with doors.
This sounds like something BajaEdition would know off the top of his head.

I talked to Dennis at Collins Bros Jeep and he said you could order a Jeep back then without a top and doors. You could also buy one without the top and doors installed, so not to scratch the tub or jambs, and take the top and doors home and store them.

Never thought I would have to worry abuot driving through a state and not having my doors on. Of course, that is just another reason I have to stay out of PA.

Call the police dept. They are the ones that would be writing the ticket. They are the ones to ask if you would get a ticket for driving without doors.

I did a little searching and it looks like you could buy a Jeep CJ7 without doors (right up to the end, 1986).
The issue is whether the manufacturer offered the vehicle without doors. It doesn't matter if your particular jeep was sold without doors. The law is concerned if the manufacturer thinks the vhicle is safe without doors.
In other words it is legal to drive any CJ in Pennsylvania without doors.

I am not even sure if a soft top door is considered an actual door. It even has the sticker on the inside warning you that it is just a cover for weather and not occupant safety.

I don't suppose there is anything in the legalese about the use of tools to remove the door??
They have to really freak when you remove the roof??
I would guess you are getting caught by the back swing of the double edged sword. With a law that was meant to keep some dufus from riding around with no doors on his 72 Chrysler Imperial, or maybe his XJ?

I drive around the lehigh valley area every year no top or doors. Ive never had an officer bat an eye. I do know of people who have been pulled over and cited for it in other areas of Pa. In both instances they took info directly to the police station that charged them and the citations were dropped. Alot of the Pa. vehicle code is written so poorly that you'll hear different interpetations. I hate Pa. for a bunch of reasons and the vehicle code is one of them. Basically you dont know what your gonna get in Pa. from city to city and county to county.

Cj 5s were sold as open body, in other words with no doors or top
but in 1984 they were not making cj5s, just cj7s. I would have to look in a few books to see if they offered CJ7s with no tops though, I do know they were removable doors and if such is the case then it could be argued in court that they are legal to remove.

I've never been to PA. If AMC manufactured the vehicles without doors it should be legal to drive them without doors. I believe this would be the best argument for court.

Over here i can drive with no doors on :)

The law says if you can take your doors off with out the use of tools you can legaly do so.

I do get some funny looks though on teh odd occasion i drive with no doors.

just look at the judge and say "your honer, it's a jeep". this should be accompanied by a look that shows how remarkable it would be for any body to be so incredibly obtuse.
