distributor swap

Is the distributor swap one that can be done with just buying one at a local parts store? Does a 1981 alreadt have an HEI distributor? I would think it does.

Yes you can just buy a HEI not sure the local parts store would have one on the self though. A search should get you lots of info on the swap.
No jeep never used the HEI dist.

no hei is a gm product, and not available as a factory option. now if you are wanting to replace your factory distributor yes you can buy a remaned unit from most parts stores. you can also buy a remaned hei dist. from an auto parts store for a chevrolet 250 straight six but you will have to change the drive gear on it, for it to work with the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l assuming thats what you have (you need to fill in your jeep info in your profile), and you will also need to tune the hei distributor to the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l 's timing curve.
