ok its been a year or to since I last posted but hears my problem had an off set drivetrain QuadraTrac wanted to do away with the qadratrac installed strightline drivetrain with locking hubs I have a 1978 C-J7 automatic AMC 304 with a 1987 wrangler tub siting on a wrangler frame was comeing home from work heard noise comring from right rear with some smoke pulled over now wont go into any of the gears drive or revirse any one have some ansewers for this problem

Define won't go into gear. Do you mean it won't move when you put it in gear? Will it roll in neutral. If you heard a noise and saw smoke coming from your rear area of the jeep you may have burnt up a bearing in the axle. If it will roll and the motor free spin when giving it gas in neutral or park then you have a Transmission or Transfer Case issue.. Maybe you accidentally knocked the Transfer Case when stopping to look at the smoke? More of a description would help a lot.

thanks for the reply moter starts and runs fine when I put it in drive it will not move the same for reverice rolls back and forward in netural just fine

Sounds like Transmission problems but I'm confused about your setup. So you got rid of the QuadraTrac ? What driveline do you have now?

Have you checked your fluid level? When you putit in gear does it feel like its going into gear? Does the RPM's change at all? Sounds to me like you had a failure in your Transmission .. You say you swapped a straight through drive line so im assuming its a 400 with the Dana 20 or 727 with a Dana 300 .. Since they are both gear driven boxes I would think that you would have not gotten ans smoke if they burned up. I would suspect alot of grinding.. you may have burned up your clutches in the Transmission or has the Torque converter go out. Did it feel like it was slipping prior to pulling over?
