Can someone ID this component and it's purpose? Obviously wired directly to battery and has a fuse on the feed. It was wrapped around the grill support rod and not connected to anything.

That is not an oem item. You might want to trace it down, or pull the fuse and see what doesn't work. It could go to something useless like a radio.

it looks like a capacitor to reduce radio noise.

Why do people take pictures sideways?:D

Identification: Unnecessary PO trash
Course of action: Remove....with extreme prejudice.
If it leads to nowhere it isn't needed.
Parts left off cost nothing, parts left off cannot fail.

Capacitor is a possibility, sensor for old alarm, circuit breaker who knows?

Looks like an old telefunken U-47 transducer-mabob. Tear it out! :)

It wasn't connected to anything, but looked like original equipment because of the way it was wired to the battery. Thought it might be to an engine compartment light, but could be the sons of the PO added an amplifier or something.

yeah, is there any evidence of quad 15 kicker subs in the back? regardless its not required for operation. good chance its failed anyway since its unhooked.

Take it off, and show us a picture of the bottom with any markings.
Looks like an old alarm 'tremor' switch.
It's not OEM with that crimp on line slice.
