My AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is tired, but running. looking for a rebuildable engine to start on for the swap when ready. do i have to have an 84-86 block or what years can i use so all is same, and how much should I pay for a used engine.

You should be able to use any AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l block no matter the year. You'll just have to swap over all your emissions junk onto the older block. Probably have to use the intake and exhaust manifold off your 84 as well for emissions reasons. Cal. is tricky. Hopefully a fellow californian will chime in.

Right now I can grab a running AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l for $AMC 150 to $300 here in Pa. That being said when I lived in Az. motors were a bit more. Here on the East coast the bodies rot away so theres a surplus of motors and drivetrain parts. Not nessascarily the same in Cal.
