Hello everybody. I have a problem with my CJ7 engine swap.
The skidplate would´t fit the Transmission mount. I don´t no why.
The engine is a 360 AMC with a T-150 3 speed and the Dana 20 Transfer Case . First my JEEP was an AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6 with the T-150 ...
Now I bought new motor mounts for AMC V8 engines, fit the transmissions and put it all on the frame. Everything bolted on the right holes.
Now, the Transmission mount is above 1 inch forward the holes I need in the skid plate.
I tested all the holes from the frame to the skid plate, but nothing fit.
I think, the T-150 from the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l doesn´t fit on a V8? Is the bellhousing too short? I don´t know. I NEED HELP !!

I assume you just move the skid plate forward and drill new holes, or custom make a new one, though drilling new holes would work out easier.

I believe the I 6 is a bit longer than the V8's.. But the AMC 150 came bolted to both of them from factory according to novak The Borg Warner T150 Jeep Transmission - Novak Conversions

As long as you are sure that everything seems to be where it should be, you can just drill the x member in and be done with it... since it moved, I imagine now you'll have some drive line adjusting / purchasing to do too...

I tried looking up over all lengths of both engines for you, but quickly realized you probably have them both in front of you :D

Edit: May have missed your point though, Is the skid plate not lining up while attached to cross member? Is the tranny mount not lining up to the crossmember, even if you move it all forward? Maybe a picture would help to discribe, or maybe i am just missing it... been a long day

Do you have several hole patterns on the frame to motor mounts?

Also how are lengths of the driveshafts looking?

What year is your CJ7 ? May make a difference.

Good morning

thanks for your posts. Here a few pics which should show my problem.
My CJ is build in 79, but I think the frame is from 84. I bought the car only in parts without the engine, but with the Transmission and the Transfer Case .
I can´t drill new holes in the skidplate, and here it´s not allowed to build a customized plate, cause the CJ should get a antique car.

Looks like you have a set of motor mount holes 1" back.

Would they not move the motor/tranny back 1"?

^^^. :D

I don´t think so. Look the pics. This are the same holes from a CJ5 with a V8 AMC 304 AMC.
I think I have a problem with the bell housing. It´s too short from a I6 to a V8. Could this be?

I could be wrong, but i think this is your problem...

See 81 was last year v-8 was offered stock for CJ according to this:

internet said:
1980 marked the return of the I4 CJ with the introduction of the GM 151 engine. 1981 was the last year for the V8 in a CJ from the factory. The AMC 304 V8 was no longer an option from the factory, only the six cylinder and four cylinder engines were available after '81.

Found here : Short Jeeps: CJ-7

So basically, the frame is probably set up for either the I4 GM or I6 meaning that while it is perfectly adaptable, the holes may not (and appear not to be) set up correctly to incorp everything together... using stock holes...

So while the 79 part would get you away with being a stock option motor (AMC V8 anyways) the frame being newer is putting a damper in the grand scheme...

I don't think it has anything to do with the bell housing...

This is all assumption though... I truly do not know, especially not being there to see it in person. I hope you get her figured out man...

If it were me I would either drill new holes in the skid plate / cross member or have some one cut out the hump were it bolts to the Transmission and reweld it forward to match up.
