:cool:After 26 years of keeping this tight I'm ready for a change. Is their a good exhaust manifold/combination intake and exhaust in one piece or headers out there on the market?Wife said don't buy cheap, said she'd forfeit a few nights out if was for her Jeep.

AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l I6
Thanx Mike

As far as I am aware of no one makes a intake/exhaust manifold one piece unit. Also, as far as I'm aware of, no one makes a replacement 2 barrel manifold. The only AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l aftermarket manifold that I'm aware of are 4 barrel versions from Clifford Performance

Or from Offenhauser

Both intakes are well over $300.

As for exhaust headers, there are two main kinds, single output and dual output, made by Hedman or Pacesetter, most of the big name places, Quadratec, 4WD or Morris4x4, carry them.

Thanx EB. Do the headers stay tight after install or any complaints on them?Seems like the manifold was a constant battle to keep tight.Bolts aren't the easiest to get too.
Thanx Mike

Get a set of Stage8 fasteners for the headers, and they will never work loose again.

Get the ceramic coated Hedman and forget it for another 26yrs.
The black painted ones get surface rust quick, but are still nice if you maintain them.
They are what I'd get.

Or you could go to the junkyard and do a 4.0 head swap, You get more power,
reuse the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l intake and grab a stock tube type header from a cherokee.
This is probably cheaper than buying a new header.

4.0 head swap info:
I really like the first link.

Thanx a lot guys sure helps.
I was thinking headers so probably go that way.Are the dual better than the single outlet as far as performance?Ceramic sure would be the way to go then.
I just rebuilt the engine about 3 years ago so wait on the head and intake.Would be nice to have the injection updated.Howell uses a GM TB 2 barrel on their injection which is what I have now.

The exhaust manifold /headers for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l won’t fit the 4.0 so if you do upgrade later they will have to be replaced. The “factory header” from the 4.0 is stainless steel and likes to expand a lot and is prone to cracking. There is stainless steel headers available for the 4.0 that seem to hold together better than stock but the performance benefit of the configuration is, in my opinion questionable.
You are right about bolts being hard to reach, it is nearly an advantage to remove the head to assemble the head/exhaust/intake and do the first torque and come back and re torque at 500 miles.
